Registration is open for this year’s tournament is only a month away and should be just as good as the past years. You can register at Montgomery County Parks and Recreation office or Backcountry Ski and Sport in both locations. The price did not go up and the shirts will be even better this year with a quick dry material. Same great food, prizes and camping also.

Yes, still having the midnight musky challenge again this year. I think the only changes are going to be that Hog Troughs will be allowed and there will be an identifier of some sort involved for the photos.

Are they going to have a webpage with all the rules and description of the classes and camping and all like they have had in years past? I have some people from out of town that are interested.

Ill be there. Ive fished it for the last 3 years. Its a good time and the price is right. I just wish there was an artificial only class.

When we first laid out the rules we talked about trying to separate artificial and live bait but there is no way to regulate it and it would be easy for people to cheat. They could say they were fishing artificial and really using craws that they caught out there and hooked them on. We also discussed that this is supposed to be a friendly tournament and there is no prize money involved so it is all in good fun. Although 1st place will get you a sweet prize

I do like the idea of an identifier though!

gate should be open mid-day fri if you want to go hit it but remember musky class starts at 5:30pm. and bass starts 5:30 sat am. we will be strict this year with identifiers so no chance of pre-fish photos. Check in/Reg is only at Headquarters this year to get your ruler if you need it and your identifier that is required. All personal rulers will be calibrated upon check in. My guess is that there will be higher water and rig accordingly, Fish On!!!

Some of y'all on the board know the new river better than me, anyone have any ideas on whether the water levels will come down enough by Saturday to be fishable for the tournament?

I am not sure! I rode around an hour or so before dark on Saturday and looked at some of the feeder creeks, and they were coming down to near normal and clearing up, so I was very optimistic. But I just looked at the gauges and they are going up. I know they got a ton of rain in the Galax area Friday and Saturday, so the upper river may be whats keeping the levels so high, I don't know. As of right now it doesn't look good but maybe a week with no rain will bring the levels down to fishable.

High Water Contingency Plan – This is just in case Event is Rain or Shine! "Hello eager participants of the Fourth Annual New River Paddle Fishing Tournament! As we all know, significant rainfall during the past several weeks has lead to high water conditions throughout our region. Fortunately, the height of the New River is forecast to drop to a manageable level in the days to come, which means we anticipate the Tournament will go on without disruption! In the unlikely event that the river level at the Radford Gage is 5 feet or above, the Tournament will be postponed to a future date. If the event is to be postponed, we will make an announcement on Friday July 19, 2013 at 12:00pm via our website, the Back Country Ski and Sport, Inc. Facebook page, and posts at both Back Country locations. Otherwise, no news is good news, and the Tournament will proceed as normal. Looking forward to seeing everyone out there!" - See more at: www.bcski.com/high-water-contingency-plan-for-paddle-fishing-tournament/#sthash.15BaaaFm.dpuf
