I'll be picking up my solo canoe on Saturday. I'm already trying to plan some fishing trips for the spring.
I have never caught a crappie. I am in Gate City. Looks like my closest, best chance at crappie would be at Hungry Mother State Park. Any other close options for me?
I have never camped/fished at Hungry Mother. Are there any sites close enough to the water where I could carry my canoe and launch it?

I actually was a park interpreter over the summer and found myself fishing almost every night after our programs. The bass fishing is actually pretty decent and the lake has a few muskies that will provide some entertainment as well. The bank along the road is ~10-20ft deep but the opposite bank is usually closer to 30ft.
As far as campsites close enough to launch a canoe from, I would suggest campground B. It's meant for campers, and is located on the creek that feeds the lake. A large number of campers would just paddle down the creek right from their campsite when they wanted to explore the lake. Camp Burson is also a close campground that is located closer to the better fishing. You can leave your canoe on the dam, you can lock it to a bench if needed, and from the campground to the dam is a short 1/4mile hike.

Never fished Hungry Mother. I use to do a lot of crappie fishing when I was younger, and we always caught a lot at Gatewood in Pulaski, and Rural Retreat Lake.
