A friend was fishing at philpott the other night for walleye. They hooked a snake head. Don't know size or anything but thought I would pass it along.

You know if they passed the info onto DGIF? I know they try to track those things and this is the first I've heard of one caught in this area.

that could be very bad for this area. those things are pretty vicious invasive predators and have already taken hold in the potomac.

Any chance you could get your friend to send me a picture of it? I sure hope he killed it.

Please post a picture; I know a bunch of biologists here that would be very interested to see if this is actually a snakehead. It's the first I know about in this area

Based on the fact that the anal fin is not elongated I would have to conclude that this is a bowfin but if you have any additional pictures that could help me be more confident.... I can only hope that snakeheads haven't been introduced into SW VA

That's a bowfin, not sure that it's legal to catch and posess one. The fins and markings differentiate between bowfin and snakehead. Still are you sure it was caught in philpott?

Yep it was caught at philpott at night. They said that the walleye were busting and then they stopped and things got real quite then they caught this fish. They did take it to the DGIF.
