Anyone have any experience making a livewell for a kayak? Or even how big of a livewell you have on your bass boats. Reason being, I am going to be fishing for the Virginia Tech Bass Fishing Team, and want to show them that the kayakers can hang with the best of them. I was planning on putting a 48qt cooler to my tankwell of my Commander 120, but was a bit unsure of if that would be big enough. I'm not fishing any lakes where I'll have 30lb limits, instead it will be on Claytor and other similar lakes where I may get 5lbs if I'm lucky I was going to use a bilge pump to recirculate/aerate the water, the biggest thing I want to know is will a 48qt cooler hold a 10lbs of bass.

That is a pretty good setup. One thing you might want to also consider is to wire the pump on a timer. Otherwise a small 7ah battery won't last all day.
The ones ive built have been similar but instead I use a through hull pump and skip the light. You can get the livewell kits at wallmart and other outdoor stores that work good 2.
Or you can go the route of running pure o2 bit that is not a very cheap route. But is extremely effective. I can keep fragile shad alive in my tank with just running o2 All day.

I love the one from Palmetto; I may put one together when I get the time. I've been so overloaded with classes and work that I just threw a pump in the cooler and used alligator clips to turn it on or off... Very cavemanish, but it kept the fish alive! What do you mean thru hull pump Mark? Like are you constantly running water in and letting it overflow out?

That guy on Palmetto is clever I wish he still posted stuff I made the crate and the kayak cart and they both were easy and very functional

The thru hull pump has a long threaded section on the intake side. You drill a hole in the side of the cooler and the intake goes through the hole and then there is a nut that you screw on the threaded intake from the inside. This allows you to keep the pump and all the plumbing/wireing outside the cooler. Ill try to take a couple of pictures of mine tomorrow for you.

I'd appreciate it Mark; makes sense to open up more space in the "livewell" portion for fish!
I agree Eric, I got a lot of my inspiration for my projects from his site.,
