My Dad is coming down this weekend (April 10-12) to visit me at VT. We are planning on floating the New on Saturday for smallmouth but neither of us has ever done a float on it. We also don't have much experience with fishing smallmouth this time of year we usually just go in the summer months. I am trying to find out what floats are good this time of year as well as what type of lures the fish are biting on. I don't need anybody to give away their secret spot or lure just some general info to get us in the right direction.
Also anyone who wants to join us is always welcome.
Thanks, Tyler

Peppers Ferry-Whitethorne. Favorite float hands down and very close to Tech! It goes right through the arsenal, and has some good opportunities for smallies and musky. It's a whole day float, but I've had my best day on the river last summer there. It's a pretty easy paddle, but as you approach arsenal falls, you need to stick to the shoal on the right side of the river (If you run it left you'll go over a couple foot drop) We also did see a couple smallmouth going crazy during a mayfly hatch on the river right below the falls.
I would stick with a pig-n-jig or a spinnerbait/crankbait if you want to cover lots of water quickly. They should be moving out of their winter holes and up towards the shallows; water temperature was up around 48 degrees last week when I was out.

I really like that float also but I wouldn't do it in cold water, sometimes you never know when your about to turtle,,,, and just before the take out at the bridge I've been through 4 foot swells, some of us didn't make it, my brother and another fellow got rolled but it was summer time. If the water still cold I'd do the Claytor Lake Dam to Bisset Park or Whitethorn to Big Falls... I think we might be doing the Dam to Bisset Park Saturday

I would rather not risk turtling in the cold water. Let me know if your doing the float from the dam to bisset park for sure and we might tag along if that is ok.
Thanks for the info guys!

I'm sorry TyF,,, I told you wrong that one spot that can be bad at times is before the 114 bridge. putting in there and going to Whitethorn only has one big shelf, like hokiefisherman said, keep to the right. but I haven't made that float in cold water yet. I have been threw there several times but not sure I want to try it again till the water warms up. Unless something changes my brother and I and maybe another yaker will be floating to Bisset from the Dam and would love to have you and you dad join us

Yea definitely that rapid at the 114 bridge can be sketchy. Another place to check out would be the float from Eggleston down. A couple minor rapids, but the float has some really cool rock bluffs and is a great place for smallies!

Looks like a 10-20 mph NW wind that day. I would put in at Riverview and take out at Bissett or Dedmon.

Tyler If you and your dad still want to go ill be at the ramp below Claytor Lake at around 9:00.... I'm not sure if my brother is going to make it but ill be there... If the wind is up we may have to start at Riverside park, we can figure that out in the morning. any other yakers want to meet up??

Saturday robOw and I met up with new member TyF and his father for a float on the NR... It was great meeting the both of them, just wish it would have been a better day for kayaking on the river we had to fight the wind all afternoon... 4 hours latter at the take out ramp there's a bank fisherman showing us his picture with a 4+lb small mouth he just caught standing 50 feet from the ramp. lol
And Sunday I went out with yakster to Hardy bridge it was a beautiful day to be on the lake but all we caught was a sun burn... I sure hope the spring bite turns on soon
