Live in Richmond. Logistically, if I can make it to the New twice a year that would be great. Only fished it once with a guide and that was section from the NR state park to a takeout I cannot recall. A few weeks ago I was in the area around the NR junction and I didn't have my kayak but I had the opportunity to check things out from the road. Boy, what a nice fishing habitat that looked to be. I normally fishing the James so the New would be a new experience (Pun intended).
1) Is there a particular river level range that is best (and safe) to fish? Is there a link to the guage? 2) Is it ok to putin below Big falls and float downstream? I was thinking if I couldn't find others I could do a solo trip and jog back to my car. 3) Does anyone fish from the NR state park downstream? Looked like a wonderful opportunity for a canoe camper. 4) Are folks available mid week to fish? Figure if I journey down there the weekday would be less hectic for parking and whatnot.
Thanks.

Above 8k can pretty swift. I prefer the 3-6k range for fishing. The fish seem to be a little more active and the river is easier to fish. www.aep.com/environment/conservation/hydro/NewRiverFlows/Pretty good fishing there. Even just paddling around the falls is pretty good. Most people float down to Eggleston and the take out is on the other side of the river. This site has been kind of slow. Check out the facebook page if no one else responds. I'm not very familiar with the upper new section.

Welcome to the site. Like Robow said the site is kinda dead. The F/B site is the one to keep an eye on. I will be retiring at the end of the month (July) and plan on fishing a whole lot more. Let me know if you're gonna be in the area and we will see what we can work out. I know Rebelyaker fishes midweek also.
