I've had the itch to learn the art, but don't have $550 to throw on my first fly rod right now.

I have rotator cuff problems. The back country paddle tournament I fished the fly rod and my right shoulder hurt for several days and was swollen. So my days with the 8wt fly rod are done.

Is 8 weight large enough for musky or is it pretty much bass size?

It would be ok for musky, on the light side, I fished for striper at the coast with it. 10 wt would be ideal but this rod could easily handle a musky.

irons, if you come across a good used trout set up 4, 5, or even 6 wgt. for a good deal, let me know. I am wanting to try to learn, and thinking I am going to start out with trout first. I have a friend wanting me to fish south holston with him.

Sure will, check eBay, there are a lot of nice rods on there. If you are starting out I would say get a decent rod and not worry much about the reel. For trout all the reel does is hold line. Get a good line as well. The rod and the line are what make a difference in your cast.
