Ok guys, I would like to put on a kayak fishing tournament. But have some questions and input from the group.
First thing is I would like to do this somewhere were those participating can camp. Some places that come to mind is Smith Mount Lake, lake moomaw, Phillpot. I know of a nice campground on the James river but doing one there would require shuttles. Not out of the question just more that has to go into it is all. What is everyone's thoughts or suggestions?
Participants - do we want to open this up to the public or keep it just the group?
Type of tournament - input on entry fee and prize. Do we want to do a cash entry fee with cash payout or do a entry fee and prize style payout? What does everyone think a reasonable entry fee would be? Another thing to think about is do we want to do an all encompassing entry fee that covers the camping fee and a dinner or have everyone responsible for their own camping fee and meal?
I'm thinking either the weekend of October 18th or 25th.
I'm open to ideas and opinions.

There was 122 entries for BKS. I'm all for this I'd love to see us get a series up. I'll help anyway I can. I'd rather do a river tournament.

I have never fished any of those except the James, and I am a river guy, so that would be my first choice... but with rivers you also have to worry about rain and river levels... Never fished Smith Mtn, but I know there are good fish there. I know nothing about moowmaw or Philpott, but I have heard Phillpot can be tough.
One other place I would suggest would be Gatewood in Pulaski. It also has a campground with a bath house.
I don't care if we open it up to the public, I am not sure we can get enough to do it just in the group. Wes tried last year, and only a handful of us committed.
My suggestion would be cash payout, unless someone wants to solicit donations, and those could be prizes to or raffle/door prize type stuff. I would say keep it inexpensive and just charge the entry fee. Not sure everyone will camp. If we camp as a group we can spit the cost.

What does everyone think a reasonable entry fee would be? I was thinking like $20?
Jeff I like the river as well. My concerns with it like you said is water levels. But also needing to shuttle could be problematic unless we just said everyone is responsible for setting up their own if we have a large turnout.
I looked at Gatewood as a possibility as it's one I've never fished and have heard great things about it. The only concern I had with it and the reason I didn't list it was because the campground is a first come first served with no reservations. So there is the risk of not getting sites for those that want to camp.

When I was wanting to start something earlier I talked to the guy the runs gatewood. He was excited and all for holding a kayak tournament there.Have you ruled out having another tournament on the New again. I would definitely suggest having it open to anyone. Maybe could contact some local paddle shops or livery's about helping with shuttles. Just curious why Oct.

I was thinking on a lake for the first time around to make things a little easier for the first one. The 2 times I've fished the new this year, the fishing hadn't been as good as other places. I'm thinking October for a couple of reasons. One being time to plan it and plenty of time to get the word out to have ad good of turn out as possible. Also if we do it on a lake the jetski and wake boarders are normally mostly done by then so the boat traffic will be less than if it's still during the summer time frame. And for those that want to camp the cooler weather will be a little bit more friendly. And with the cooler weather the fishing is a little bit better and fish are not as deep.

I don't think shuttles will be too big of deal for future tournaments on the rivers. We can make each responsible or do it like we do when we do a group float. Don't give up on the New Mark, its been a tough summer with the low clear water, but its still one of the top, if not the top fisheries in the state. I prefer fishing rivers because thats where I fish and have confidence, but I am game for a lake one. I say if you are putting forth the effort to put this thing together, we should fish where you want and be happy you are taking the time to do it. Like I told you, I will be glad to help in any way, just don't have the time to get the whole thing together and all that. Hopefully we will have a good turnout and can do more next year. If we don't do Gatewood this year, we should get a group together and camp up there one weekend before it gets cold.
$20 sounds fair to me.

I agree with Jeff. Don't give up on the New. Like Jeff said this is your baby so let's do it where you like. I'm not a lake fisherman so that's why I'm pushing for a river. Hahaha I will say that come Oct a lot of people put up there paddle for a bow.

Still working on the details. I've called around to several places and have narrowed it down to a few select places. I should have more info here in the next week or so.

All, I haven't forgotten about this. I called this morning to check on the permit and should have it and an answer sometime next week from the state park.

Well just got word back from their special events coordinator and the park is closed the that Saturday due to a triathlon. But the following weekend is available the 25th. Whats everyone's thoughts on that date or would everyone like to keep that date and try and find a different location?
