I arrived Tues the 3rd of Sept. I was anxious to hit the salt for the first time in a kayak. We were attending my stepson's wedding at wild Horse 4x4 beach in Corolla. What a top shelf place that is. I think it had 24 bedrooms, a couple of bars and kitchens. They rented it for a week with the wedding on Fri. Wed. was blowing a bit and I needed to get a license, info and bait so I headed to the bait shops. They said pretty slim chance of catching anything in the sound. I bought some bloodworms and figured on hitting the ocean. Thurs. morning I woke around 6 or so. I didn't even eat breakfast. Loaded up and hit the beach. I looked at the waves and tried to time my entry to miss as much of the big ones as possible. Got through them with no problem. I paddled out a bit and threw out two rods baited with the bloodworms. Not much was happening so I started throwing different lures with my third pole. I would pause now and then a rebait my other two wondering what was happening to my worms. I had seen something hitting the surface now and then but nothing would hit my lure. Finnally as I was quickly running out of bait I went with one pole in my hands and held it. When I felt what could be a nibble (and I do mean nibble) I set the hook. I reeled in and didn't even know I had something. I guess it was about 10" long. I caught two more of them and took a pic to show someone who would know. They said they were kingfish. I cut the last one up for bait but that was all I caught. One of the other guys who was attending brought some surf rods. He and I fished the surf that nite but caught nothing. I was sure we would hookup at nite. The waves were glowing florescent green in the dark as was pee when you peed on the beach. Never saw anything like it. Pretty cool stuff. I got out again Fri morning but the wind and surf were petty high. Probably was foolish to go out but what the heck.I pretty much got swamped going through the surf. Lost my beer but nothing elsy.No problem I had more in the cooler. I just paddled around a bit with different lures and no results. Had a great time. Would like to try it again farther south by the inlets. Sorry for the long windiness but still pretty cranked up about it.

You have any pictures you can post up of the fish you caught? Ive never seen a 10" kingfish. Ive seen them much bigger. Were you using live blood worms? In the salt I stopped using live bloodworms years ago and went to the Fishbites fake blood worms, they work like a charm. Also cut squid does pretty good. Ill catch small spot and crocker then throw them out on bottom rod with large hook and let another free line and catch sharks all the time. Whole squid will catch sharks as well.

Wish I had known about the fake ones. The bait shop said black tips were numerous right now. One of them was rigging a pole to go out that nite. He said he was using tuna heads, He would paddle them (kayak) out past the sand bar and drop the bait and then paddle back to shore and wait. After what I saw at nite...you couldn't pay me enough to go out there in a yak in the dark. Pretty scarey!

I bet you caught Sea Mullet=Northern Kingfish.. they are not like a Kingfish that you catch off piers with a Pin rig. Sea Mullet love blood worms. They are also awesome table fare.
The heads off sea mullets are Reddrum "candy". We would clean all the sea mullet we could catch, save the heads on ice to catch big red drum at night on surf rods. Hook the heads through the lips and throw em as far as you could with a big 12 foot long surf rod.
Glad you had a good time Phil..I was wondering how it went. Corolla is not the best place this time of year..it's a little early for the bite up there..October the drum will roll through..

I'm not positive what kind of fish it was. I showed a guy the tail and he said it was a kingfish. I showed another guy a pic and he said the same thing. If I get time I will post a pic.

They are also referred to as "whiting". Floated the New on labor day from Ivanhoe to Foster Falls. River was way up. I ended up with 3 SM and missed a bunch..just floated to fast to keep a bait where I needed it. Water had a little color to it also..Thought about you Philip..

Sounds like a great time Phil! All I caught were sharks on my one kayak trip in the salt.

Not to derail or steal the post but winter time striper looks fun in the bay if anyone is interested?

It's a lot of fun, but also a lot of work. I usually will hit up the HRBT light line and catch schoolies all night long! It does get a bit tiring with the amount of paddling though

I have only done that once. It was an expensive, cold trip that didn't pay off for me though. The water had dropped below 40, and it they had lockjaw; I'd be down to try my luck out there again though for a Kipto Kow!
