Anyone ever float and fish the roanoke river from the base of leesville dam to the park in altavista? Was poking around google earth today for new places to fish and this looked like a good stretch though it is long at 11 miles. Talked to a guy I know and said he used to float it but not really fish it as he was never set up to fish. He said on a normal day just floating and not paddleing it would take him 10-11 hours. So does anyone have any info on this stretch?

I have patrolled that stretch in a jet jon back when I was a game warden but I have not floated it. There is some good fishing below the dam and depending on what time of year, you can catch walleye, white bass, striper, and year around catch small mouth large mouth catfish ect. On a lot of other sections below altavista, you find .other places to put in and take out. There are tons of places people bank fish that you can park and drag a kayak. Espically on the stretch between Long Island and Brookneal. I know there are some on the road that runs from Altavista to the dam along the river, but can't remember if its posted land or how far down below the dam they are . If its close to you, I would take a day and just ride the roads in a vehicle and look for these trails and mark them on a map or gps, and then get back and plan your floats.
The river muddies up pretty bad after rains, and raises pretty quickly when they are letting water out up at the dam. There is some really good small mouth areas on that river.

From the dam to Goose Creek (the bridge just after you turn off of 43 going to the dam)is the best fishing IMO. From Goose Creek to Altavista is a lot of flat water that doesn't do much for me. But as of last summer DO NOT park at the bridge at Goose Creek. The property owner has posted the property and I have heard that the GW patrols Wthe area and writes tickets for parking near the bridge. There are other places to park that are not too far of a walk. Where the river runs along Rte 43 between AltaVista and the dam is posted also. It's a good half day float. The fishing isn't stellar but it's convenient for me (30 min from home). Typically, during the summer the dam lets out water every hour on the hour. A horn will sound and shortly after, the gates open. It's not too crazy but I'm not that skilled of a paddler and like to be at least 100 yards down stream when the gates open. I like to put in right after the water stops, paddle down to the first ripple and get out and fish that until the water washes me down stream. I saw some new surveying pk nails in the ground at the put in at the dam last summer and was told that improvements were planned for the put in. Busy place on weekends during the summer. Hit me up and we'll give it a shot.
