I have a question for anyone who wants to give some imput. I am toying with the idea of coming up with a line of rods specifically for kayak fishing. I personally just use the same rods that I do on the bass boat since I fish out of both at the moment. I have seen in other forums and youtube video's where some guys will cut the butt section to make that part shorter and easier to manage in the yak. Is there a need or want for a rod specific designed for yak fishing and if so what would you like to see and what would yall's preferance be?

I think its all personal preference. I kind of like the longer butt on the spinning rods when fighting a big fish. I like having it against my arm for leverage. Then again the longer butt sections are a pain sometimes hitting on my pfd, paddle and other things. I think the one thing I have noticed about my rod selection is before fishing from a kayak, I had gone almost entirely to bait casting rods and reels. Now after 3 years of kayak fishing I take 4 spinning rods of different actions and weights and only one casting rod primarily for buzz baits and spinner baits. I would probably try a sensitive spinning rod, if the price was not too high.

I definitely prefer a shorter butt as I can't stand it when it is hitting me and I think I feel a tap. I also prefer a a stiffer tip section. I have and never use a baitcaster. I really don't understand why some prefer them over spincasters but then again I also prefer mono. Just saying.

What would be a preferred length? I fish mainly 6'6" - 7'6" rods depending on what I am throwing. But then again I fish out of a boat and yak so I've just been using my regular rods out of the yak. One of my blank manufactures has come out with a line of blanks that are all 6' and designed to be built just like a regular rod but with a shorter butt section. What would be an acceptable price range for a rod specifically made for kayak fishing and high end components? Sorry for all the questions and I'm not trying to advertise or push my rods. I am just trying to work out a lineup for a possible deal with a local outfitter and just trying to see what the local yak experts would like to see.

I use different rods in the kayak than I do in the triton. The triton I use 7 foot rods, the Jackson no longer than 6.6. In the kayak I can get by with three rods. A 6.6 mh baitcaster, 6.6 m baitcaster, and a 6.3 m spinning rod. I use baitcasting rods 90% of the time im fishing. I stand a lot when im fishing in the kayak so I can get by with a longer butt, but for someone who sits all the time a 6 foot rod with a short butt may be the ticket. Back in the day we used the the rods with the pistol grips, you could roll cast a spinnerbait under docks low hanging limbs they were the bomb back then. Good luck, post some pics when your done.

Thanks for the feed back. Yea the blanks I am looking at are designed to be used as pistol grips so they would be perfect for a standard setup with a shortan butt section. Well I think I might try those out and see if I can't make a deal with the outfitter.
