On 6/23 myself and a buddy from kayak militia are coming up to the New and its a first for both of us as of right now we plan to Eggleston Springs campground. We plan to stay as long as the fishing is decent and the flow of the river and weather allows, we are bringing 2 vehicles so we can shuttle ourselves. Do any of you locals have any suggestions to what would be the best sections for us to float and is there anything we need to watch out for on said floats such as major rapids and what not? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Well howdy Eric,
Been awhile. I did the Eggleston to Pembroke float Thursday. It is one on the best floats I know of. There are no big rapids to worry about. The fishing has been really slow on the New lately. I have no idea why but I only caught about 5 and my buddy only 1. There was a full moon which may have had something to do with it...don't really know. Maybe it will pick up soon. I'm sure some others will want to join in when ya'll get ready to come up. We did hurry thru some better spots as we wanted to get off the river at a decent hour to go out to dinner. Things seem to pick up in late afternoon and on but I surely wouldn't want to get caught out there after dark. Back to the float...If I was gonna do my first float on the New, Eggleston to Pembroke is the one I would choose. It is VERY scenic and has every kind of water you would like to fish. Maybe get lucky and get a muskie or two also. It is about a 7 mile float and can take as long as you want. Oh, just realized you are floating on a Monday. That may limit some from joining you. I know it will stop me. Gotta work. Damit

sorry eric, my computer crashed and i am strictly on the phone for a while. i am one who does not like the eggleston to pembroke float at all. it is a very scenic float, but i have not done well on several times floating it, and have fished it with a group 2or 3 times and no one had a stellar fishing day. i prefer 114 bridge to whitethorn or whitethorn to big falls or parrot river rd. the 114 float does have 1 set of rapids. i also like the river between big falls and eggleston. i think there are a couple small ripples or so on that one also, there are some small ones on the eggleston to pembroke also. here are a couple float maps www.ncnr.org/vapaddle.phpwww.dgif.virginia.gov/fishing/waterbodies/display.asp?id=163§ion=maps
