Hey all, question for anyone who has a f150 with a 5.5 ft bed. I have a 16 ft canoe, and withthe tailgate down, I have just a couple inches shy of half the canoe supported. Doesntseem safe, but i do have a hard bed cover to help keep the front down (in addition to the safety straps. Anyone have any experience here? Not sure I wantto drive up 81 with less than half the canoe in the truck. . . .

I would recommend getting a bed extender that hooks into a reese hitch, i wouldnt carry it without support further back.

Great advice, I used one when I had my canoe. works great. I did disable it when I was out so it wouldn't disappear. Uncross uses one with his kayak.

I use the bed extenders for longer kayaks as well. Can get a cheap one at Harbor Freight for something around $70. There are some nicer ones out there but will cost you double.

If you do go to Harbour Freight, search online for coupons they usually have a 20%off you can print out. I think I only paid about $50 for my bed extender.

A little late to the party, but I always follow the 2/3 rule. Support 2/3 of the kayak or canoe to keep it from getting warped or anything during transport. Short trips it's fine, but if you run any distance it really pays off in the long run to keep the kayak/canoe well supported
