Who all on here kayak fishes during the winter? I'm really wanting to try it this year and have a few spots on Walker creek that I know hold big fish through the colder months and I feel pretty comfortable fishing them in the cold but I've always wanted to fish below Foster Falls when the walleyes start to stack up and I've been told by some guys in the Narrows area where to find them in winter but don't want to hit the bigger water of the New without some guidance and company.

I will get out on the warmer days in winter, if I either have some calm water that holds fish or have others with me. Honestly I usually musky fish in the winter and do most of that from the bank or wading. I hope to do some small mouth fishing this year also, I know a couple deep spots back home on the new that I have caught small mouth in the winter musky fishing, but really haven't targeted small mouth in the winter since moving up here. I would be glad to go with you sometime, Greg and I talked about fishing some in the winter while we were out the water the other day.

That sounds good to me. I went to the ramp below Narrows falls yesterday and sat there for a good 15 minutes before finally deciding to unload and try fighting the wind. After about and hour and almost getting rolled when the wind swirled while I had my leg kicked up on a rock I decided to get the hell home while the wind was pushing me toward the Ramp. I love fishing the upper new for musky and walleye late in the year but have always done it out of my boat and never the canoe or yak.

Jeff, have you ever fished the yadkin river? I had to go to Wilkesboro for work back in July and there was some good looking water down there. I know it's sometimes a double digit difference in temps down that way but I don't know about any of the floats or anything.

Im in for some winter fishing. I fish lakes all the time in winter because I cant get anybody to go. I think you could put in at the ramp at glen lyn and paddle up. That right bank going up looked deep and should hold smallmouth in the winter. I know where there is a bunch of winter holes here in Wv my buddy has a jet boat so we fish out of it a lot.

Mark, I've fished Philpott a few times but from a boat. I've wanted to go and try for some walleyes down there for a while and if I remember correctly I think Jared knew that place pretty well so maybe we can all get together and fish it sometime.
Greg, my biggest concern is having somebody to go with on moving water so I'm up for it anytime. After January I'll be buying a WV license again and hopefully I'll get to fish the bluestone and greenbrier as well as the small lakes like Key and Moncove and maybe you can show me those winter holes if they're not too bad to get to in winter flow.

I hope you do buy your Wv license. You guys need to come next spring and float from shanklins ferry to mouth of indian creek. This float is a very good float and good fishing.I have fished moncove but never key. You need to come over and fish dan hale you don't need license to fish it its a private lake you do have to pay 8 dollars, there is huge largemouth plus big trout. Plum orchard lake is also kayak friendly its only 300 acres. My winter holes are very easy to fish, I don't do much white water in the winter.

You're preaching to the choir when it comes to shanklins ferry and dan hale. I just have a prop motor on my jon boat but I used to launch at that little gravel ramp and run as far up river as I could get and did really well, never have floated down to Indian Creek though. As for dan hale, I'd say it's my favorite lake. It's the first place that I can remember fishing with my dad back before they shut it down for all those years.

I have never fished it, I have fished the new in NC, and thats the only river I can think of that I have ever fished in NC. Back when the Riverbassin forum had a lot of traffic, there were some guys on there that fish the yadkin. I fished with that group from NC one day on the new up at Blue Cat on the New on rt 100. They used to be active on NCangler forum also, I have not been on there in a long time, but I am sure you can find some info or get some advise on that site.

Jeff, I have a buddy in NC that kayak fishes a lot. He's even on the bending branches and supernova lights prostaffs. Hopefully he can tell me a little bit about the rivers down that way because it would be nice to have some warmer waters to fish if our winter is like last years was.
