As muzzleloader season is winding down lady luck finally shined on me. I passed up a 4 or 6 pointer last Sat. morning. Missed a 40 yd. shot on Monday. Since I prefer to shoot does and haven't seen one yet when I saw a small buck heading to the left of my stand I couldn't pass it up. I was hunting on a small ridge line in the Jefferson National forest. As soon as I heard it coming through the leaves I just knew it wasn't a squirrel. I stood and turned around in my climber stand knocked the first safety off and took aim. I hit the second safety and click...a misfire. I quickly recocked the gun and aimed again. I knew it was a good hit when it went off. I watched the buck run down into a hollow and drop. No need to reload. Let me tell you, this 62 year old heavy smoking man had a hell of a time getting the deer up to that ridge. Long story short, it should be some excellent eating. I cut the tenderloins out and took him to the butcher. Now for rifle season. Sorry but no pics.

Congrats Phil. I had intentions of bow hunting all the way through till rifle season this year and haven't been in the stand once since season started. When I bought a new bow back in the spring I hadn't planned on being so damn addicted to kayak fishing.

Anyone hunting tomorrow? I'm thinking about blowing it off since it's gonna be so cold. I can't take it like I used to and I'm off the last week of the season for hunting. Guess I'll just see what it looks like in the morning. And Heath...how could you buy a new bow and not get out? Shame on you. What kind of bow did you get.? I have given bow hunting up as it seems impossible to get close enough for a good shot here in Va. When I lived in NJ it was a piece of cake. Maybe they were just more used to human presence because of the more dense population up there. I sure do miss it though. Not to brag but I killed so many deer in NJ with my bow the deer used to refer to me as Philliam Tell .

Phil you just made me literally laugh out loud. I bought my little brothers Matthews Drenaline when he went to buy his new Chill R. Around here the woods are so thick that even in rifle season ya don't get much more than a 40 yard shot unless you're field hunting. Your post inspired me and I went and sat in the stand for the last hour or so before dark. Got winded right before dark and never even saw the deer but it was nice to sit in the stand for a while.

I thought about not putting this thread out there but I'll try to get you while you're still laughing. Y'all know how cold it was Sat. morning. Well, I waited til the last minute to get switched over from muzzleloader to rifle. Down stairs getting it all together. I had considered not going as cold as it was but decided to give it a go. I put on many layers hoping to stay warm. I was getting pretty hot packing it all up so I was rushing to get done and off to the woods. I usually hang my coat over the barrel of my rifle while walking to the stand. When I got to the stand and up in it I realized I left my coat hanging in the basement. I guess you call that a senior moment. let me tell you it was pretty dam cold that morning. made it til 9AM and gave in when I started shivering. Didn't see a thing on top of that. Oh well, I have to work next week and then am off for another week for the last week of rifle. We had the tenderloins for dinner last nite,. MMMM good. Glad you got out Heath. Hang In there, lady luck will smile on you I can feel it in my senile still chille bones.

Nice Phil! If only you knew the bad luck I had the beginning of the season; 3 misses with a bow and once with a muzzleloader that wasn't properly sighted in... Long story short my buck Friday evening felt great to put down, despite the fact it was only a spike, it's still meat in the freezer!
Let me know if you ever want to hit up the forest or head out some time. I'd be more than willing to head out with you if I'm around!

Interesting Tyler. I'm on vacation the week of Thanksgiving. I'll be hunting all week. Let me know if you're available. Got a whole National Forest behind the house. I could use a younger guy to help me drag one out. That last one near killed me.

I'll probably take you up on that! I'm headed back to Richmond for most of the break, but Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays as well as the weekends are always open for me when I get back in town. When you get a chance to head out let me know, as long as I have 12hr notice I'm usually good!

Tyler, I'm off the week of Thanksgiving. If I understand you, you will be in Richmond. Is that correct? I will be hunting every day that week along with this Saturday. You are welcome to come any time. Give me a call but I do go to bed at 8:00 PM. These dam Va. laws are hard for me to understand. If I shot a buck which I did do I have to shoot a doe next?
And about bow hunting...does Philliam Tell need to give you some coaching? I usually never shot beyond 20 yards because I always felt they could jump the string especially if they were on alert and nervous.

Phil, I think the earn a buck in Roanoke County just applies to Private land. If you are hunting on Government Land you are ok to shoot another one. Roanoke County is the only one out here with the earn a buck regulation.

Yea, the first with a bow was I had been drawn for about 90seconds, and just got tired before I got a great shot... The other two were the same does on seperate days 30-40yd shots on the national forest I probably shouldn't have taken. We hadn't been seeing a lot, so I took a long shot; glad I didn't hit it, because we were wayyyyyyyy down in a holler, and that drag wouldn't have been fun.
If you're up for going out the Saturday after Thanksgiving, I'm willing to give it a shot. I think it's a doe day on the forest then too!

I'm up for it Tyler. Give me a call on the phone before then and we'll talk. Thanks for the info Jeff. That is the way I understood it but it didn't make sense to me to regulate what you shoot on private land. I don't know why they have to make it so confusing.
