Probably a stupid question, but I'll ask anyway. Is it legal to fish at night in a kayak, and if it is, what do you do about the required navigation lights that must be on after dark.?? If the first answer is no, you don't need to answer the second....

I believe all you need is a flash light so other boaters can see you... I use a led light on my head and I have a little lamp that I turn on when other boats are in the area... If you don't have a motor you don't have to have navigation lights

Rebel is right on it. As long as your boat is under 21ft and is human/wind powered you only need a bright white light to warn other boaters such as a headlamp or flashlight. Nothing is required like navigation lights on a power boat. No such thing as a stupid question it how we learn!

Do you keep your lights on all the time, or only if a boat approaches you, or you approach them? Seems like it would be safer to keep some kind of light on all the time, so you can be seen at all times.
Do you think it would be practical to install a rear navigation light ( like on a bass boat), and run it off a 12 volt lawnmower or motorcycle battery? This light would be mounted at the very rear of the kayak, and would stay on all the time while on the water.
What I'm getting at is this: If I'm out at night, I want folks to see me at anytime I'm on the water, without the hassle of turning flashlights or head lamps on and off while trying to fish.

Yakattack makes a nice collapsible light with flag. I believe it's led and small battery is inside.
If I fished on lakes at night, where there are boats I would have one on all the time. Some guys have led kits that light up their whole kayak

The only time you need anything besides a flashlight by law is if you're in the salt at night. Its a uscg requirement that you carry night time flares.

Unless you fish lakes at night a ton I probably wouldnt go through the hassle of a permanent nav light install. Like Jeff said a yakattack visicarbon pro is an easy install for the occasional night trip. I use a DIY light pole made out of an orange fiberglass driveway marker you can get at Lowes with a battery powered glow stick ziptied to it. I fish Smith Mountain Lake a ton at night and havent had any issue with boats seeing me with that setup...and its super cheap!
