A few of us were talking about,, and wanting to float and shoot.. maybe we can get that in on the 5th or 12th of Sept... I really want to do this, this year right bigD... I'm not sure what part of the river we were going to hit but we need to be working on that to.... If we hit the river anywhere around here we can camp at rebel's landing for that also

Waterfowl hunting has exploded around here. Phil and I went to whitethorn one day last fall and there were hunters everywhere.

Its a blast...literally! Ive been doing it the last 4 or so years on the James and its nothing to bag close to your limit (10 geese) in an afternoon. Ive never done it on the New but whitethorn down looks promising. If we do it on the James Ive never seen another soul hunting the stretch I hunt but Im up for anything. 12 guage and 3" magnum steel shot are the MINIMUM and 3 1/2" is even better cuz those birds are tough.

The James sounds good to me. I just want to get in on this year... When we talked about that night it just sounded like a blast, we got to do this

Tyler slayed them last year. I have a lab that would love this but I don't think I would take him in a kayak. Have to use the jonboat.

We put a hurting on them all last year from the kayaks/canoes... Just be sure to know the regulations where you're at. More or less from 81 through to the Dedmon center you are only able to shoot from the middle to the left side of the river. You can usually get very close to them before they spook, but once a group gets shot they become very skittish towards any canoe/kayak/boat and will start flying away well before they come in to range. We usually would float down on them and wait until we saw the first goose begin to flap its wings and that's when we fired our first shots, sometimes it was closer than others, but other times we were almost too close! And it goes without saying, but always be extra careful when carrying and shooting on the river. We would be chasing them through some shallow stretches and be bumping the bottom, so be extra careful out there. I'm hoping to get up there for a couple days early season to get a few down, hopefully it will line up with one of y'alls floats.
As far as needing 3 1/2 in shells I will say this. I went out during the early season with a double barrel 20 gauge and #4 shot, and Lilly's brother went out with his 12 gauge and 3 in #4 shot. We took down 12 geese in 5 shots, so although my normal go to is a 12 gauge 3 in BB, early season their skin is not as fatty/tough so just about anything will take them down.
