I don't have a fly rod . Besides I have way too much money tied up in rods and reels now. Not sure I can afford fly fishing the way I spend money on regular fishing stuff. Looks very challenging and loads of fun. Maybe one day.

In all honesty you dont need the number of fly rods that you might have in conventional tackle. To fly fish for smallies you could do with one rod, for example a 7 wt 9ft rod would be all you would need. As for the reel it just holds the line, no need for a fancy drag system like you would need for saltwater. You could set yourself up with a TFO or orvis rod for under $150, if you check ebay even cheaper than that. For under $300 you could buy everything you need to fly fish for smallmouth. Just a thought. But yes fly fishing is very addictive.
Hi, my name is Irons and i am a flyfishing addict!

Grubs and tubes are killer here in wv.I throw everything in the book at them.the only lure I haven't caught anything on is a chatterbait. I know they should work but no luck at all

I tried the chatter bait, when it was the rage a few years back... For largies and smallies. I think I caught 1 fish in a pond on one. no other bites, had a muskie follow one back to the boat one time. and that it about it. Haven't thrown them in years.
I did read the other day about the Ned jig... 1/16 ounce jig head with oversized hook with a 5 inch senko cut in half.... Probable will try that one out this year !

My buddy won a bfl on buggs island on a chatter bait. You would think they would work in rivers for smallies. I may dig some out of the Triton and try them in the river this spring.

I've thrown chatterbaits for musky but I have never caught one. Haven't caught a bass on 1 either but I don't generally use the chatterbait.

Big 8 inch worms and brush hogs haven't caught bass for me either. I typically like a smaller bait for river fishing. I'm more a finesse type fisher.

I have caught a ton of bass on brush hogs but only in lakes.l also throw 12 inches worms in lakes. A 7 or 8 inch worm will work in the river. Its a bait most people don't use and it gives the smallies a different look.

Yea most people might think a smallie wont it a 7 or 8 inch worm. I mostly use 4,5, and 6 inch worms.
