OK guys, lets break it down and discuss some of your favorite river smallmouth lures, and techniques. Also some lures you've tried without any luck. Don't be bashful! For me I love sharing the things that work or don't work. That's what fishing's about right?

Alright, here are just 5 of my favorite river smallmouth lures. I wont touch on color specifics just the lure type/make. 1. Rebel Crawfish: this little crankbait has produced good fishing for me during all seasons and weather conditions. With its tight wiggle, and compact-life like characteristics, this bait can be very versatile in a river situation. Especially around isolated rocks. 2. Zoom lizards: I like to let them sit on the bottom in slack water, and when I'm floating drift it along side my kayak. I caught my biggest smallie to-date on a artificial lizard. 4lb 12oz 3. Shakey head jig: In the many years I've river fished I never tried this finesse presentation until this past summer, when a good friend of mind really emphasized its ability to produce fish. Since then I keep a shaky head stand up jig head tied on all the time. When finesse conditions are right this is what i want to be fishing. Worms and creature baits mostly, but that means hundreds of options in today's market . 4. Spinnerbait: 3/8 and 1/2 oz Colorado or tandem willows. When the wind is blowing, the bass are chasing shad! And you better have your spinnerbait tied on. Rip it, speed it up slow it down, and subsurface. Subsurface early morning too. Just like a topwater. 5. Senko: I can't count how many fish I've caught on these things. Red eyes, bass, catfish, and even hooked a couple muskies. Twitch it or dead stick it, either work great. Little fish to big fish and all different species. It catches fish! Well, that's just a few of my favorites. I'll get into dislikes later . Lets hear what everyone else's got!

Up to 2 years ago a 4 in watermelon zoom lizard was my go to bait, doesnt seem to work that well any more . Smoked color grub's do good, black seko's seem to do decent. I told myself i am going to use the Fly Rod most of the time this summer, so we will see how it work's out.

The lizard is a do nothing bait for me. That's the only way I can get it to produce. Smoke is a good color in a variety of lures. And my brother in law swears by a black senko.

Nothing wrong with using a fly rod. I myself have never used one.

Sencos are my all time favorite!I also use a lot of tubes and have hooked a couple of muskies on them. I too will throw spinnerbaits and love to fish buzzbaits. You just can't beat a top water hookup. I don't throw many crankbaits but have had some luck with a rebel craw too. I need to try more jigs as too many of you guys swear by them. I don't think I;ve ever caught anything on them except snags.

The lizards seem to work well for me in the Spring/Early Summer, and you really never can go wrong with a Senko on the end of your line. But anyone who's ever fished with me ought to know by now that I have one, sure fire, go-to bait. River Rock Baits Standard 3.5" Tubes! Last year I caught ALL of my biggest fish on this one bait, including an 18", 20" and a 22" C Class Smallmouth. I love this bait so much they should sponser me. Hmmm...

Senko is a given, I always have some sort of senko tied on.
Years ago when I lived on the other side of the lake I would say a tiny torpedo, buzz bait, pig and jig, zoom utail worm , grubs and buzzbaits. My favorite lure in years past was a flip-0-matic helligramit, which they don't make any more.
I still fish alot of different plastics worms and grubs. Trying to use tubes more, just never seem to get the bite. I have not found the topwater bite out here that we seemed to have back home. I rember days where I threw tiny torpedo's and buzz baits all day, and caught fish all day.
Going back to the pig and jig more this year, and jerk baits. I've caught a lot of fish on x raps.

Sounds like we all have some similar styles and favorites. Mean no one will go without baits on the water.

Scott I agree with you on River Rock tubes. They are awesome. I like the coffee scent myself . I think we both know that they are "special".

I like to fish jig n pig on the front of a cold front after a full moon. The bass will move a little slower, and so that's how I'm going to fish the jig. Remember it is still a suttle presentation. Why a full moon? The crawfish are more active after a full moon. Not so much on a new moon. This based on what I've always read and heard. Anyways its a superstition for me now lol.

OK, all you fly rod guys. We need to pick a day and all leave the spinning/baitcast gear at home and give it an honest whirl. What the heck, the worst that can happen is we all get skunked. I have a cheap 7wt and I tired it one day for about an hour. The fish should have hit my offering but nothing. So what did I do ? Waded back to the truck and got my spinning tackle. Haven't tried it again.
